Anthropologists from criminal investigation, gene editing, tribal welfare, making policies, to top rankers of IAS Anthropology is the scientific study of human beings in totality. It studies man in biological and social perspectives. This is a multi-focussed discipline which understands the human behaviour by investigating into human evolution and adaptability, primatology, human and population genetics, human biology, human culture, social organization and comparative study of human societies, folklore, ethnic studies etc.? Anthropologists’ fieldwork varies from the explorations in Siwaliks and archaeological sites for understanding human evolution, study of human modern and remote societies from biological and social aspects, to tribal societies for culture and linguistics. Anthropologists are engaged in answering the following types of questions: When did the humans begin walking on two legs, Why did the size of our brain change over time, When did humans make the very first stone tool and lit the fire, How the humans are adapting to very cold and hot kinds of climates, How did the changes in the earth’s climates affect humans, Why do we feel short-term nausea when we go uphill, Why the variations occur in different populations of the world, Why do humans cooperate and live in groups???? Now a days, the anthropologists are involved in forensics and death investigations, fingerprint and footprint science, human skeletal analysis, reconstruction of the face from the skull, DNA fingerprinting, the study of human genome editing, law and Medicine, Public health and disease, law and conflict resolutions, gender relations, making tribal policies etc. The Department of Anthropology at Panjab University is a well-established department with learned faculty members and also houses a unique SRK Chopra Museum of Man. The department runs MSc (Hons.), BSc (Hons) and Diploma in Forensic Science and Criminology and PhD in different aspects of allied fields and anthropology. According to Dr Kewal Krishan, Chairperson of the Department, recently, our students have been placed in various government organizations and multi-national companies. A few of them are Anthropological Survey of India, Archaeological Survey of India, Tribal Development Department of Himachal Pradesh, Government College, Baramula, Department of Forensic Sciences, Guru Ghasi Das Central University, Bilaspur, State Forensic Science laboratory, Punjab, Central Forensic Science laboratory, Chandigarh, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi, Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, CRRID, Chandigarh and Companies such as CKS International, Google, Tata Elxsi, Human Factor International etc. Our many alumni have worked as Directors/heads of these laboratories and organizations. Above all, Anthropology is a famous optional subject for IAS and State Civil Services aspirants. Since last two years, the aspirants have been getting top ranks by taking anthropology as optional subject.
