*Securing the border, preventing infiltration and curbing arms smuggling are the primary responsibilities of the Central Government
*The entire network involved in sending weapons from across the border to disturb peace in Punjab must be exposed

Chandigarh, June 19, 2026: Gurdaspur MP, senior Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, has described the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, 25 pistols and 368 live cartridges near the India-Pakistan international border in Amritsar as an extremely serious and alarming incident. He said that it is a major threat to Punjab’s security system and demanded a high-level investigation into the entire matter. The complete network operating behind this consignment of weapons should be exposed and strictest action should be taken against those responsible.
Randhawa said that the action taken by the security agencies deserves appreciation, but at the same time, this incident raises several serious questions. How did such a large quantity of modern weapons reach Punjab? If the consignment had not been recovered in time, it could have been used for a major terror attack, organised crime, or a conspiracy to disturb peace in Punjab.
He said the Punjab Government must clarify why the state’s intelligence agencies failed to detect such networks earlier. For the past several years, weapons and narcotics consignments have been continuously reaching Punjab from across the border through drones, which indicates that the intelligence network and law-and-order system within the state need to be further strengthened.
Targeting the Central Government as well, Randhawa said that securing the international border and preventing infiltration and arms smuggling from across the border are the primary responsibilities of the Central Government. Repeated incidents of this nature indicate that there are serious gaps somewhere in the border security system.
He demanded that surveillance and patrolling by the Border Security Force (BSF) in border areas should be further strengthened, and advanced technology and effective strategies should be adopted to prevent smuggling through drones. Attempts at weapon smuggling and spreading instability in Punjab allegedly sponsored from Pakistan must not be allowed to succeed under any circumstances.
Randhawa said that Punjab has witnessed the painful period of terrorism in the past. The people of Punjab want peace, brotherhood and development. Therefore, instead of shifting responsibility onto each other, the Centre and State Governments should work together in coordination and ensure that Punjab’s soil is not allowed to be used for any kind of anti-national activity.
