Advanced gastroenterology care saves life in a complex case at Livasa Hospital, Khanna

Khanna: Livasa Hospital, Khanna, has successfully managed a highly complex and rare medical condition under the expert care of Dr. Pulkit Dhiman, Consultant – Gastroenterology.
A 66-year-old female patient presented to Livasa Hospital with severe breathing difficulty. A CT chest done outside revealed fluid and pus accumulation in the lungs, and a chest tube was inserted to drain the infection.

To determine the root cause, a repeat contrast-enhanced CT chest was performed at Livasa Hospital, which revealed an abnormal connection between the food pipe (esophagus) and the windpipe (trachea) — a serious condition known as an esophago-tracheal fistula. Such abnormalities are rare and require advanced, specialized intervention.

A UGI endoscopy conducted at Livasa Hospital confirmed the presence of an opening at 28 cm in the food pipe. After detailed counselling of the patient’s attendants, a special covered self-expanding metal stent (cSEMS) was successfully placed in the esophagus, sealing the abnormal connection and aiding in the patient’s recovery.

This marks the first such case successfully managed at Livasa Hospital, Khanna, underscoring the hospital’s growing expertise in advanced endoscopic and gastroenterological care.
