Administration starts process of distributing free wheat to 4.54 lakh smart card holder families

Ludhiana: The district administration today set its wheels in motion for providing succour to 4.54 lakh Smart Card holder families in the district by distributing free wheat for two months in a single go under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojna.

On the directions of the Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the district administration led Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma started this mammoth drive to give relief to approximately 17 lakh eligible beneficiaries in the prevailing scenario due to the spread of Covid 19.

Divulging the details, Deputy Commissioner said that the district administration was duty-bound for fair distribution of wheat to eligible beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). He said that in wake of the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, the government has decided to give 5 kilograms of wheat per beneficiary per month for two months.

He said that Food, Civil, and Supplies Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu were committed to ensuring that no person suffers on account of the non-availability of food grains.

He said that regular monitoring of the entire process would be done so that proper distribution of wheat takes place. He said that proper weight by depot holders has to be ensured with zero tolerance towards any malpractice.

District Food and Supplies Controller Sukhwinder Singh Gill started this mammoth drive to benefit the needy strata of the society. The teams of food supply teams have been formed by the administration to complete this gigantic exercise seamlessly and transparently, he added.
