Jalandhar, April 27, 2026: DRV DAV Centenary Public school , Phillaur celebrated English Language Day and World Book Day with great enthusiasm and literary spirit through a special assembly conducted by the Literary Club.
The assembly commenced with an insightful speech by Samaira Bhandari of class X, who eloquently highlighted the life and works of William Shakespeare, emphasizing his timeless contribution to English literature. Adding to the richness of the program, students of Class X showcased various idioms and phrases coined by Shakespeare that continue to be widely used in everyday language, making the session both educational and engaging.
Navneet and Ishmeet from class XII further captivated the audience by presenting interesting facts about the English language, shedding light on its vastness, evolution, and global significance.
The highlight of the event was the enchanting segment titled “Characters Come Alive,” where students from IV to XI dressed as famous literary characters stepped out of books and brought stories to life on stage. This creative presentation beautifully spread the essence of imagination and fantasy among the audience. The excitement reached its peak when Shakespeare himself “visited” the assembly, and students joyfully wished him on his birthday, creating a memorable and lively atmosphere.
A unique and impactful activity, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read), was conducted wherein the entire school community—including the Principal, teachers, students, administrative staff, and even visiting parents—paused their work to engage in silent reading simultaneously from 11: 00 am to 1130 am. This activity strongly reinforced the importance of cultivating a reading habit.
To further encourage literary expression, a creative house-wise competition titled “Readers’ Insight and Reflective Writing Challenge” was organized for students of Classes XI and XII. Participants were given ten minutes to select a book and write their reasons for choosing it, promoting quick thinking and reflective skills. Additionally, a storytelling competition was conducted for Class III students, where young learners showcased their creativity and confidence through expressive narration.
Principal Dr. Yogesh Gambhir, in his address, appreciated the efforts of the Literary Club and the enthusiastic participation of students. He emphasized the importance of reading in shaping one’s personality and broadening perspectives.
The celebration was a grand success, leaving everyone inspired to read more, learn more, and explore the endless world of literature.
