944 gm milk availability for every Punjabi

Chandigarh, August 26, 2012: Punjab has bagged the top position in the field of dairy farming with the production of 95.4 lakh MT milk annually.

Disclosing this here today Animal Husbandry Minister of Punjab Gulzar Singh Ranike said that Punjab has the highest milk availability (944 gm per person) across the country. He said that after the record production of wheat 179 lakh MT during last season, Punjab has also set an another mile stone in the field of milk production.

Talking about the latest report of Union Government about the Livestock, Ranike said that an average daily milk production by a cow in the state of Punjab was 10.947 kg , which was highest in the country. He said that Meghalaya was on the second spot with 8.983 kg per cow, followed by Kerala 8.920 kg.

He further said that in Punjab Local breed of cows have also produced highest milk 6.501 kg in a day, leaving behind Haryana 4.769 kg per day.

He said that buffalos in the Punjab have also shown a great improvement in milk production. He said that buffalos in the Punjab have produced 8.585 kg milk, which was also highest in the country.

He said that presently livestock’s has playing an important role in the economy of the Punjab as it was contributing 13 percent in the states income. He said that Punjab Government has set a target to establish 200 hospitals, a polyclinic in each block in the next three years, Besides giving a new look to veterinary dispensaries.
