92 Councillors in Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Don’t Even Have a Room to Sit, While Mayor Has Four Offices: Mehta
Senior leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta has targeted the Mayor over the lack of adequate seating arrangements for councillors in Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, the largest municipal corporation in Punjab.
Ludhiana, August 18, 2026: Senior leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta has targeted the Mayor over the lack of adequate seating arrangements for councillors in Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, the largest municipal corporation in Punjab. He said that while the Aam Aadmi Party Mayor, who claims to represent the common people, has well-equipped offices in all four zones of the Municipal Corporation, there is not even a proper place to sit for 92 councillors in the 95-member House in any of the Corporation’s zones.
Mehta said that within the Municipal Corporation House, only three councillors—the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor—have been provided with convenient office facilities. On the other hand, councillors from both the opposition and the ruling party are facing difficulties due to the lack of space to sit in the Corporation offices. He alleged that lakhs of rupees are being spent on constructing and expanding facilities for the Mayor’s office at the Municipal Corporation headquarters in Zone A, while no attention is being paid to the convenience of ordinary councillors.
Questioning the Aam Aadmi Party government’s claims and actions, Mehta said that if even councillors, who are considered the first rung of democracy, do not have a room to sit in the Municipal Corporation offices, one can easily imagine the situation faced by ordinary people who visit the Corporation offices to get their work done.
Mehta appealed to the Mayor to immediately provide a councillors’ room in each zone of the Municipal Corporation so that councillors can sit in the Corporation offices, listen to people’s grievances and provide appropriate assistance in resolving their issues.
