Ludhiana, December 2, 2021: “Obesity is a chronic disease which is linked to severe chronic diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, fatty liver, heart diseases, knee and back pains, sexual dysfunctions, infertility and depression. Sedentary lifestyle, spending more on-screen time, and less of outdoor activities are leading to increased prevalence of obesity among the adults and children, especially in Punjab and Chandigarh”, said leading Bariatric Surgeon, Dr Amit Bhambri, SPS Hospitals, Ludhiana.
During the Bariatric Surgery Conference BARIME-21, which was recently held at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi, Dr Bhambri further said that obesity is a major public health problem in India and particularly in Punjab region. It has reached epidemic proportions and around 27.8% in males and 31.3% of females in the state are either overweight or morbidly obese and having high body mass index (BMI). 
Dr Amit Bhambri participated in live surgery workshop and also presented his talk on outcomes of Bariatric Surgery on Weight-loss and associated diseases. Around 200 surgeons from all over India attended the conference. Dr Bhambri himself is the first bariatric surgeon trained from premier institute, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
The doctor further said that due to unhealthy lifestyle, the person gets overweight. Most people refuse to accept that they are suffering from obesity and its associated diseases.
“People must know that obesity can lead to many heath diseases. Bariatric surgery is a very safe procedure for the people to get rid of extra body fat. It’s a life changing and life-saving procedure, rather than a cosmetic procedure. For the people, who have BMI more than 32.5kg/m2, bariatric surgery is the best option”, Dr Bhambri added.
He further said that after undergoing the bariatric surgery, most of people get rid of their diabetic medications and all other diseases and also feel much energetic and younger.
