30 students detained after protest over university row

New Delhi, June 26 (IANS) Amidst the standoff between Delhi University and the UGC over the four-year undergraduate course, some 30 students were Thursday detained while trying to march towards Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The students gathered at Central Secretariat and said they wanted to meet President Pranab Mukherjee to seek his intervention in the controversy that has halted this year's admission process in Delhi University.

The students were detained and taken to the Parliament Street police station where they clashed with police. They were later allowed to go.

A few members of another student group, Krantikari Yuva Sangathan, also protested outside the residence of Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh, demanding his "apology" for introducing the four-year course last year.

Another group of students gathered outside the office of the University Grants Commission (UGC) located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, and raised slogans against the vice chancellor.

The UGC has ordered Delhi University to scrap the four-year programme and return to the earlier three-year undergraduate course.
