Ludhiana, March 4, 2017: Department of Orthopaedics and Joint replacement, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana organized 1st Indo – US Preventive Health Awareness Programme on 4th March, 2017. The programme was held under the supervision of Mr.Vivan Singh Gill, Director Fortis Hospital Ludhiana.
This was an open house debate where public should be given an opportunity to clear their doubts and queries from the panelist. More than 150 people participated during the event.
Panellist of the event were Dr.Darneil E Blackmon MD Orthopaedic Surgeon, US, Dr.Sanjeev Mahajan, Dr.Sandeep Puri and Dr.Narinder Kaur Multani
Giving information regarding Arthritis, Dr. Darneil E Blackmon MD Orthopaedic Surgeon, US said Arthritis, especially osteoarthritis, is on an alarming rise with a study saying we have over 180 million patients in India. Arthritis occurs commonly in small joints of the hand, the vertebral column and the knees. Broadly, it can be divided into osteoarthritis — arthritis due to wear and tear of muscles with age — and inflammatory arthritis. While osteoarthritis strikes people aged 65 years and above, the younger population is found suffering from rheumatoid arthritis more often.
Dr. Sanjeev Mahajan, Director, Orthopedics, Joint Replacement, Arthroscopy & Sports Medicines use computer navigation in his surgeries and have been practicing over 20 years.
Arthritis, if disease is diagnosed at right time, problems like stiffness of knees, swelling of joint and tenderness along the joints can be avoided. If it’s in advanced stage, successful and proven surgical procedure of tissue sparing total knee replacement can be the solution and patients can lead a normal life and conduct daily chores of life said Dr. Mahajan.
Around 1 Lac knee replacement surgeries were done over last 12 months and about 70 % of them were females. Typical Indian female bone size is small, osteoporotic in nature and bone stock is less. Hence there is a need for smaller size implants with multiple size options, which cuts less bone and accommodate full bending of the knee (Hi- flexion activity).
Under various circumstances, Maxx Medical Freedom Knee joint prosthesis from USA has become quite handy over last 4-5 years. Due to its component sizing, an eye towards preserving bone during surgery and high flexion features, Freedom Knee can quickly be dubbed the "Asian Knee" and used on patients throughout the country. Indians generally have less bone stock than their western counterparts, a condition that can make surgery more difficult and lead to a more limited range of motion. With Freedom Knee, surgeons finally have a knee replacement option specifically designed with Indian patient size and lifestyle needs in mind.
Freedom Knee comes in a multitude of small sizes with high flexion to address this requirement, says Dr. Sanjeev Mahajan, Director, Orthopedics, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana.
Knee joint replacement surgery is a proven procedure; results are very good and quite satisfying. With multiple choices of implant systems available today in India, Freedom knee strikes a golden balance between inventory, sizes, implant fit, range of motion and price. Its still the only system sold globally yet designed with features that specifically address Asian patients’ needs.
