Jalandhar, September 27, 2019: The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management celebrated the festivities of the World Tourism Day on Friday here in Lala Chanchal Das Auditorium.
The basic aim of the celebrations was to foster awareness among the students about the social, cultural, political and economic value of tourism and the contribution the sector can make in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
A presentation on importance of tourism in India was given by Nitish Thakur, Head Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. In his presentation he highlighted that in 2019, in line with UNWTO’s overarching focus on skills, education and jobs throughout the year, World Tourism Day will be a celebration on the topic ‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’. He stated that in the traditional Indian culture a guest is treated like a god and Indian tourism industry has taken forward the sentiment and has adopted “athiti devo bhav” as its tag line. He highlighted the fact that tourism sector is estimated to grow at 7.9% by 2023 and will be the fastest growing sector in the nation.
Dr.Manoj Kumar, Principal DAVIET in his address appreciated the hard work being put in by the department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. He stated that every state in India has a rich potential to attract tourists. He gave the example of Punjab and said that Golden temple is a must visit for everyone. He also highlighted that the heritage buildings of the state have yet not been developed and maintained to attract tourists. He emphasised the fact that the role of tourism role in job creation is often undervalued inspite of the fact that tourism generates 10% of world jobs. He shared that in a country like India it becomes imperative to promote tourism so that the masses can be benefitted in terms of revenue generation and continuous employment opportunities as tourism sector provides 40 million jobs to people. He emphasized that new policies are needed to maximize tourism’s potential to create more and better jobs, especially for women and youth. He also shared that tourism has proven to be a resilient economic activity as in each of the seven years following the global economic crisis of 2010, the number of worldwide international tourist arrivals grew at 4% or above.
Arvind Ghai, Secretary DAVCMC expressed his happiness at the fact that in spite of the fact that it is the first batch the seats are full. He highlighted the fact that in the current times there is a mismatch between the demands of the tourism industry and the skills set of the graduates in India. He showed his confidence that DAVIET will be able to bridge this gap and will be able to provide technically skilled professionals to the industry who at the same time are also responsible citizens of the society. He also highlighted the fact that tourism is a major source of employment because of its labour-intensive nature and has a significant multiplier effect on employment in related sectors. It is estimated that one job in the core tourism sector creates about one-and-a-half additional or indirect jobs in the tourism-related economy.
