Ludhiana, March 9, 2017: On the World Kidney Day, a seminar was held in the Department of Nephrology at Dayanand Medical College on “Obesity and kidney disease: Hidden consequences of the epidemic”.
According to Dr JS Sandhu (Professor & Head of Nnephrology), the prevalence of obesity worldwide has increased manifold over the last three decades. Obesity is a potential risk factor for the development of kidney disease. It increases the risk of developing major risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease, like diabetes and hypertension. Now-a- days, there has been a lot of focus on creating awareness about adopting a healthy lifestyle and prevent diseases related with kidney.
Meanwhile, to celebrate World Kidney Day & create awareness about kidney diseases, Gift of Life Organ Donation Awareness Society (GLODAS) in association with DMC, PAU and Nightingale Nursing College organized ‘Walkathon’ on 9th march 2017. Prominent among those who participated were Mr Kanwalpreet Kaur, Comissioner Municipal corporation Ludhiana, Mr A.S.Nanda VC GADVASU, Dr Rajiv Bhalla Civil Surgeon Ludhiana, Dr Sandeep Puri Principal DMC&H Ludhiana, Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh Professor Urology & Head of Transplant unit DMC&H Ludhiana, Dr Gurmeet Kular ,Dr Sarabjit Singh Narangwal, Mrs Anita Kochar HOD Home sciences College PAU, faculty and 400 students. A talk was delivered to Faculty and Students of Homesciences College, College of Nursing, DMCH and Nightangle College, Narangwal. According to Dr Aulakh, World Kidney Day is the most widely celebrated event focused on kidney health across the globe. This year’s theme “Kidney Disease and Obesity” promotes education on the harmful consequences of obesity and its association with kidney disease, advocating a healthy lifestyle and healthcare strategy recommendations that tackle the magnitude of the burden of obesity and kidney disease, informed Dr Aulakh.
Currently 1.5 lac People every year suffer from end stage kidney failure disease. We are able to do kidney transplant on 5000- 8000 lucky ones with organ donated by their near & dear one. Same is story for liver and heart transplants. On the other side one brain dead person can save 8 lives and help many others.
To make people aware about such organ donation and not to waste organs so this marathon was organized. Marathon was flagged off by Municipal commissioner and Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana at 9:00 AM from Aarti Chowk. ‘Walkathon’ was concluded at Punjab Agriculture University by holding a seminar for the students and other dignitaries present there.
