WORKSHOP ON VEGETABLES AND FLORICULTURE CONCLUDES AT PAU

Ludhiana, June 1, 2017: Detailed discussions on vegetable crops and their post-harvest management, floriculture and plant protection measures, agricultural engineering, sericulture and agri-economics were held during the two-day Research and Extension Specialists’ Workshop, which concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today.

Chairing the concluding session, Dr D.S. Bhatti, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU, said processing of vegetables was more popular than selling of raw material. He urged the extension functionaries to promote processing among the growers for giving additional benefits to them.

During the technical session I, the subject-matter specialists highlighted the present status of vegetable production, characteristics of newly developed varieties of vegetable crops and delved on weed management in garlic.

In the technical session II, experts informed about the production technology for boston fern, techniques for dehydration of foliage of ornamentals, insect-pest management in cole crops, management of root knot nematodes in tomato nursery by soil sterilization with basamid, management of late blight disease in potato with melody duo, and newly developed varieties of flower crops.

The technical session III witnessed deliberations on value addition and economics of vegetable crops, drying of bittergourd, machinery for vegetable crops, storage structure for onion, soilless cultivation of vegetables in poly house, rodent problems and their control in vegetable crops.

The participants also visited the Vegetable and Floriculture Research Farm, Processing Unit, Food Industry Centre, Farm Power and Machinery Research Farm, and Punjab Horticultural Post-harvest Technology Centre in PAU.
