Bathinda, February 4, 2013:The week-long cancer screening and awareness camp has started at Max Super Speciality Hospital, here today.

The camp was inaugurated by Baljit Singh Bir Behman, Mayor Bathinda and Kamal Kishore Yadav, DC, Bathinda.

The camp would offer discounts to people for cancer screening tests like Mammography, Papsmear, X-Ray, PSA and all types of radiology tests. Team of expert doctors from Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda comprising of renowned Radiation Oncologists- Dr. Rajesh Vashistha and Dr. Manjinder Singh Sidhu and Surgical Oncologist- Dr. Ved Prakash Kalra would counsel people for their cancer related concerns besides educating them about the significance of early detection of the disease.

Speaking during occasions, Dr. Aniruddha Suranglikar, General Manager, Operations, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda said that on this World Cancer Day, we took upon ourselves the onus to educate people about the perils of different forms of cancer. We were equipped with the most advanced key medical equipments like LINAC for Radiotherapy, 1.5 T MRI and 16 slice CT which is technologically the most advanced and a first in the region, to combat cancer at the grass-root level, he asserted.

With this Cancer Screening Camp, we would aim to inform residents of Bathinda and adjoining cities about the significance of screening for cancer, informed Dr. Rajesh Vashistha, Sr. Consultant, Radiation Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda.

Ironically once known as the Cotton belt of India, the Malwa region is becoming the cancer belt owing to the excessive use of pesticides in the fields. Data depicts that there are 23,874 cancer patients in Punjab with 33,318 cancer-related deaths in last five years. According to the Government report, the Malwa region with Bathinda, Mansa, Muktsar, Patiala, Sangrur among other districts recorded 107.4 cancer cases per lakh population as against the national figure of 80 per lakh population.
