UNMANNED RAILWAY PASSAGE: Kohar appeals to people to take utmost care while crossing

Chandigarh, January 1, 2013: Chairman State Road Safety Council Punjab and Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar appealed to the vehicles owners to take utmost care while crossing unmanned Railway crossings due to foggy season.

Disclosing this here today Kohar said that out of about 850 unmanned Railway crossings 75 crossings have been identified as sensitive and accidents prone in the state. Due to thick fog in the winter season, drivers were unable to assess the coming speedy trains at such unmanned Railway crossings hence, becomes the victims of severe accidents, he said.    

Kohar said that nearly 3500 people lose their lives in Punjab every year due to road accidents, leading to irreparable loss of life. "It has been noticed that maximum accidents were taking place due to consumption of liquor while driving, usage of mobile phone, overloading , stray animals and due to unmanned crossings", he added.

Emphasising on the need of effective and sincere implementation of road safety norms and traffic rules, Kohar said that Punjab Government has initiated various awareness campaigns to prevent road accidents.
