Ludhiana, November 7, 2013: Secretary of DMCH Managing Society, Prem Kumar Gupta has said the Department of Ophthalmology has recently been equipped with all the latest ultramodern equipments.
The Department is headed by Professor GS Bajwa, said Gupta at a press conference here on Thursday. Dr Sumeet Chopra, Associate Professor, the eye department has been upgraded with the procurement of latest machines.
Speaking about INFINITI Phaco Machine (2013 Model) with patented torsional phaco, Dr. Chopra said the machine is available for the first time in Ludhiana. He added that a new technique of cataract surgery (Topical Phako) has been started in Ludhiana for the first time in DMCH. The procedure of ‘Topical Phako’ is a no-injection, no-stitch and no-bandage cataract surgery. With this surgery, the patient is able to resume his normal work on the same day. Painful injection in the eye is not given. Earlier, the patients of the city had to move to other cities for getting this specialised surgery done. The package rates starts from Rs.8,000 to Rs.50,000 depending on the type and quality of lens put in the eye. Department of Ophthalmology is organising an Advanced Phaco Workshop for eye surgeons of the city on November 10.
About High Definition Spectral Domain Zeiss OCT Machine (2013 Model), Dr. Chopra said with the first installation in Northern India, the machine is useful for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions, which damage the backfilm of the eye called ‘retina’ with particular effect to the centre of the retina which is involved with focusing on objects. This happens in conditions like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.       
Regarding Zeiss Green Laser (2013 Model), Dr. Chopra said this it is used for the treatment of conditions like Diabetic Retinopathy.
Dr. Chopra further said ALCON A Scan (2013 Model), is used for accurate assessment of the power of Lens power, which is put in the eye after cataract surgery. And Zeiss Digital FFA (2009 Model), is beneficial for the diagnosis of diseases of retina like vessel blocks and leakage, he revealed.
