The Yacht Club of Hyderabad sailors put up an excellent performance at the Asian Federation Cup
Hyderabad, April 28, 2016: After creating two National Champions in the Junior and Sub Junior Categories last year , Rishab Nayar and Juhi Desai of Hyderabad are now ranked No.5 at the Asian Federation Championships at the Junior and Sub Junior levels.
Rishab Nayar after winning the Monsoon Regatta and thereafter the India International at Chennai, went on to represent India at Honkong and Abu Dhabi to sail consistently and grab 5th position overall. He still has few more years under his belt to remain in this category.
Rishab started sailing at the age of 12 and his first major medal was a silver at the Monsoon Regatta. He moved early to the Laser given his height, weight and created a storm by beating Arjun Pradipak’s record of being Junior National Champion at the age of just 14 in 2015 December.
A little bit of bad luck with three heavy wind capsizes in Honkong, Rishab climbed back at the finals at Abu Dhabi Asian Federation Cup to finish fifth overall.
“Hongkong was not a great regatta with three capsizes, the light and fluky winds at Abu Dhabi gave the locals an edge leaving me without a medal. But I have a few years to go and will be back next year to get to the podium. For now 5th is a good Asian ranking’ commented Rishab Nayar, on his present achievement. He is currently studying at Silver Oaks school and sailing for the Yacht Club of Hyderabad for 5 years now.
Another promising sailor from the city, Juhi Desai is No. 5 in Asia, is currently 13years started her career at the tender age of 8. The club almost refused her at that stage given that she was diminutive but the parents insisted that she and her elder brother will come together to learn. She has turned out to be a feisty 13 years with the capability to fight hard from within the fleet to come up to No.5. in Asia
Juhi performed effortlessly at Abu Dhabi despite confusing wind and tide conditions and propped herself at No.5 missing the podium with just a few points.
“I need to focus on understanding the tide and work hard on my fitness levels. With 2 more years in the Sub Junior level I am now aiming to get a national medal and thereafter hit the Asians again next year.” said Juhi
Juhi Desai is from Delhi Public School and has been training at the Yacht Club for the past 5 years with a few trips to Malaysia while her elder brother Tanishq is currently undergoing intensive training at Malta.
The Asia Cup is a series of championships at Honkong, Singapore, Chennai and Abu Dhabi.
“Two No.5 spots at the Asian Federation Cup at Abu Dhabi is proof of the cutting edge levels of coaching and guidance at the Yacht Club of Hyderabad. We are now training a new batch of 30 kids and see a lot of talent emerging from the city while we are looking out for more and more amongst the young in the twin cities.” said Suheim Sheikh the Chief Coach and Founder President of the Yacht Club.
