Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan cum Parthenium Eradication drive organised at UHF
Rich tributes were paid today to the architect of modern Himachal Pradesh and the state's first Chief Minister, Dr YS Parmar on his 112th birth anniversary at the Nauni based Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF).
All the statutory officers and staff paid floral tributes to the visionary leader whose strenuous efforts led to full statehood for Himachal Pradesh. Dr HC Sharma, UHF Vice Chancellor read out the life sketch of Dr Parmar along with his various achievements. He said it was matter of great pride and honour that the university was named after the great leader. He urged the students and staff to follow in the footsteps of Dr Parmar who dedicated his life to the development of the state and betterment of the poor and farmers.
The management and senior officers of the university carried out tree plantation on the occasion.
In a befitting tribute to the leader, this year the university also celebrated the day as ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan cum Parthenium Eradication Day’. All the university students, faculty and staff took part in the drive, which was carried out by the UHF’s Department of Environmental Science.
To undertake the drive, the staff and students were divided into nine teams with each group assigned the task of removing Parthenium from the different areas of the university. The drive was carried out under the watchful eyes of group facilitators and field guides. The weed was later disposed of in a proper manner.
Parthenium weed is considered to be a cause of allergic respiratory problems, contact dermatitis, mutagenicity in human and livestock. Owing to this weed’s aggressive growth, it leads to the reduction in crop production and threatens biodiversity.
