Ludhiana, May 31, 2016: World Anti-Tobacco Day was observed today in DMCH, where medicos and students from College of Nursing make impressive posters depicting ill-effects of tobacco use. This poster making competition was organized held by the newly-formed Youth Club of DMCH. The patients present in OPD Block had a chance to know about bad effects of tobacco use from these posters.
A lecture was also organized, in which Dr Akashdeep Singh (Associate Professor of Chest) made the audience aware of the dangers associated with tobacco use. In his address, Dr Akashdeep Singh said that Tobacco use is the one of the greatest cause of death all over the world. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs and other organs of the body. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cancer. He also elaborated about the effects of passive smoking which means inhalation of smoke, Such sort of smoking is particularly dangerous for children. Children exposed to passive smoke are at higher risk of respiratory infections and asthma.
The occasion was graced by the presence of the Principal, Dr.Sandeep Puri, Medical Supdt Dr Sandeep Sharma, Dean Academics Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Assistant Dean Academics Dr Sandeep Kaushal, Dr Sanjeev Uppal, Dr Deepinder Chhina and Dr Dinesh Jain. A short speech was delivered in general OPD to spread awareness among all patients about the hazards of smoking and doing tobacco. Pamphlets written in both English and Punjabi against tobacco use were also distributed in the General OPD. The winners of poster competition were awarded prizes by the dignitaries present on the occasion .
