IRRIGATION DEPARTMENT ISSUES DIRECTIONS UNDER “MISSION TANDRUST PUNJAB”
Ludhiana, July 23, 2018: Mr Gurjinder Singh Bahia, Executive Engineer, Bathinda Canal Division, Irrigation Department, Punjab, has informed that under the Mission Tandrust Punjab, the department is educating the public about ways to not pollute water as well as saving it for coming generations. He said that some persons try to pollute as well as steal it for their vested interests.
He stated that the Bathinda Branch provides water for irrigation as well as for water supply in seven districts of the state. He said that it has been observed that some people residing in villages along the Canals/tributaries/minors sometimes try to commit theft of canal water and even pollute it, which is illegal. Mr Bahia said that the Sarpanches and Gram Panchayats of all villages have been urged to make the village residents aware that they should not bathe their cattle in the canal, as it leads to pollution.
The Executive Engineer stated that discarding dead animals in canals/tributaries/minors is banned and stealing of canal water by installing pipes is an offence. He said that bathing/washing clothes or disposing sewerage in Canals/tributaries/minors is illegal.
Mr Gurjinder Singh Bahia stated that if any person is caught indulging in such practices, then strict action would be taken against them under section 70 of North India Drainage and Canal Act 1873, which can lead to jail and fine or both.
He appealed to heads of all Municipal Committees, Nagar Panchayats, Gram Panchayats and area residents to assist the Irrigation Department in checking theft of water or pollution. He urged that if any person has any information about any such culprits, then they should inform at phone number 0164-2220158 and your identity would be kept secret.
