TERMING CANCER A RESULT OF SINS COMMITTED BY A PERSON TOTALLY UNSCIENTIFIC AND ABSURD: IDPD

Ludhiana, November 24, 2017: Reacting to the statement of Health Minister of Asam Himanta Biswas Sarma that Cancer is caused as a result of sin committed by a person or his predecessors Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has termed it as totally unscientific and absurd. Dr S S Soodan-President, Dr Arun Mitra-Sr.Vice President and Dr Shakeel Ur Rahman-General Secretary have said that this statement from the mouth of health minister who is supposed to be the custodian of health of the people is dangerous and spreading myths and strengthening false beliefs. Cancer, they said is caused as a result of several factors which are environmental, dietary habits, intake of carcinogenic substances and genetic outlay of a person and many more. It is in no way a divine justice as propounded by the minister. Medical fraternity should refute such obscurantist ideas. There are several myths about health care in our society and such ideas from the mouth of minster further strengthen such myths and therefore must be refuted scientifically. Instead of taking steps to improve the health care delivery system such statements also seem to be a deliberate attempt to escape responsibility to provide health care to the people of India who are reeling under heavy economic burden as a result of out of pocket expenditure on health.
