Chandigarh, August 8, 2018: Tarq Prabal, an Asian style of Parliamentary Debate Competition is being organised by the Legal Aid Society, University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh from 9th to 11th August, 2018. The competition is designed to provide student debaters with the opportunity to debate on topics of current importance. 30 teams and 27 adjudicators from 18 different Educational Institutions nationwide are participating in this maiden competition.
The competition is being organized in the memory of Lt.Shri G.K.Chatrath who played an active role in the establishment of UILS. The Dean Faculty of Laws, Senior Adv.Anu Chatrath, Additional Advocate General, Punjab has been kind enough to lend her unconditional support to this event.
Senior Advocate Mr.Anmol Rattan Sidhu along with the Director of University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University will preside over the Inaugral Session for the event that will commence at 9am on 9th of August.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jaswant Singh, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court will be presiding over the Valedictory Ceremony as the Chief Guest and Senior Advocate Mr. Atul Nanda, Learned Advocate General, Punjab will be the Guest of Honour for the event on 11th of August.
The introduction of Parliamentary Debate adds another learning dimension to the curriculum of UILS for polishing the professional debating skills and research in legal and social sciences. The objective of the competition is to give an adequate exposure to the students to involve themselves in public speaking and to make them more confident and also to improve their critical thinking with sound reasoning power. The event provides a forum for fledgling debaters to showcase their skill and expertise.
The 3 Core Adjudicators; Amitoj Singh, Shivam Dhiri and Hriday Kohli, are avid debaters who will ensure a precise adjudication with accurate rationale and principle based reasoning.
Amitoj Singh has great experience in debating and adjudication, winning numerous Best Adjudicator awards and is currently the Secretary of the prestigious SAASC (SAASC, also known as the Speakers’ Association and Study Circle is the official literary society of PEC).
Shivam Dhiri has won prestigious debate competitions (like IIT Ropar PD '17) and Best Adjudicator awards. He is currently the Joint Secretary of SAASC.
Hriday Kohli has made a name for himself in MUN and Debating circuits. His experience as a Core Adjudicator is commendable.
All the participating teams and adjudicators will be competing for exciting cash prizes worth Rs. 65,000/- and the following awards will be given away:

• Best Adjudicator
• 2nd Best Adjudicator
Dr. Amita Verma and Dr. Karan Jwanda are the Faculty coordinators of the Legal Aid Society and it is because of the unconditional support of (Prof.) Dr. Rattan Singh, Director, U.I.L.S. that first of its kind event is being conducted in the department.
Arpit Bansal and Hemlata are the Student Conveners of this event while Aayush Arora and Shivam Jindal are the Student Co-Conveners. They all are 4th year students pursuing B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) from U.I.L.S., Panjab University.
