Chennai, November 24, 2017: Dr. K R Balakrishnan, the renowned cardiothoracic & transplant surgeon from Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai, was honoured with Best Performance Award for his extraordinary contribution towards organ transplant by the Tamil Nadu government. In an event held today at Kalaivanar Arangam, the honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. Edapadi K Palaniswami presented the award to him.
Tamil Nadu has been actively conducting awareness programs for organ donation in the past. As part of this, they had organised this award function to honour different people who played vital role in organ transplant.
With over 30 years of experience, Dr K R Balakrishnan has successfully conducted over 20,000 surgeries, including Valvular Heart procedures, Aortic Root replacement and the Ross procedure. He has played a significant role in elevating the Indian medical practices on a global scale and is the first surgeon in India to have completed over 150 successful heart transplants. Having set various milestones in transplant surgeries, Dr. K R Balakrishnan was also the first to perform LVAD implant in the country and has been actively participating in creating awareness towards organ donation. He also performed India’s first pediatric heart transplant surgery on a two-year nine-month-old international patient from Russia. Some of organ transplant recipients have participated in marathons and completed it successfully.
