Tabu is regarded as one of the most accomplished actresses in India. She is known for enacting strong female protagonists and has won critical acclaim for her wide-ranging performances. When you find her name on the credit list of a movie, expectations automatically shoot up. And, Tabu has never disappointed and always displayed the finest performance on screen till date. On the occasion of the World Television Premiere of ‘Fitoor’ on Saturday, 23rd July at 8:30 PM on &pictures, the actress speaks about her equation with the director Abhishek Kapoor and co-actors, Aditya Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, her role and future projects.
Q Tell us something about the movie Fitoor?
Fitoor is a love story of two individuals, who face difficulties in completing the circle of love. All the characters in the film are strong and have their own background story. I am sure viewers of &pictures will enjoy this movie. I’m looking forward to the World Television Premiere as the reach of television is so huge.
Q Tell us about your role in Fitoor?
Begum Hazrat’s character is very complex and dramatic. The story is about how she influences and creates problems for Noor and Firdaus who are in love. The role looks negative at a glance, but when you watch the film, you realize that the character’s experiences have shaped her behavior. Consciously or unconsciously, she has a role to play in the epic love story.
Tabu: “Abhishek is an unusual person, all heart and extremely talented!”
Q What made you say yes to the film?
Undoubtedly, the climax of the film was the most appealing to me. Also, Abhishek Kapoor’s vision of the character, the storyline and his approach towards each character made me accept the role.
Q How was your experience working with Abhishek Kapoor?
I was the senior-most person on the sets. But it was a baggage-free experience for me because I have known Abhishek Kapoor as a teenager. He is an unusual person, all heart and extremely talented. He has a distinct thought process and style of film-making. He is serious about his craft of film-making. We are professionals on the sets but at the same time, we share an extremely close bond as friends.
“Tabu is one of the few actors who can mould herself according to the character. She is a dream for a director,” - Abhishek Kapoor
Q How was your experience while shooting for the film?
I worked with Aditya Kapoor and Katrina Kaif for few days and the experience was great. Aditya is a promising talent while Katrina has already carved a niche for herself in the film industry. The experience was memorable because as artists we were able to learn from each other’s strengths. It used to be a fun riot on the set.
Q How did you prepare for this role?
I had just 2 days to get into the skin of the character. Abhishek was very particular with the interpretation of the role and had certain expectations. But I had already prepared myself mentally for it. The character was definitely not an easy one as Begum Hazrat has an extra edge of madness compared to the character Gazala that I portrayed in Haider.
Q Haider, Drishyam and now Fitoor all had you in grey shades back to back. Do you love watching grey characters yourself on screen?
All of us get engaged only when there are a lot of emotions on screen. In theatre too, drama is what moves us, touches us, makes us feel or think. Most of us react and connect to that in some way. Obviously, on screen, what I love watching is drama. Apart from drama, I love comedies. I can watch one comedy films over and over again and laugh every time. Laughter and drama engages you. Audiences keep waiting to know what’s going to happen next. That’s the mystery I like watching and maybe creating on screen with my performances.
Q. Given the different roles you have done, how do you select your projects?
It has always varied for different projects. I have done films with completely new directors, with no clue about their vision…Chandni Bar, Maqbool – I am not sure what drives me.
Tabu: “I want to do an action film that has all the Bollywood masala”
Q What is your ‘Fitoor’ in real life?
I love collecting nail paints and stationary. I have cupboards full of stationery. Everywhere I go, I collect post cards from that country and add it to my collection.
Q Tell us something about your future projects?
I am currently reading many scripts and yet to come across an exciting one. I want to do a full-fledged action film that has all the Bollywood masala. I hope I get something that is out of the box and the audience haven’t thought of me playing such a role.
Fitoor is an adaptation of Charles Dickens classic novel ‘Great Expectations’ and stars Katrina Kaif as Firdaus and Aditya Kapoor as Noor.
