Surjit Hockey Society to honour meritorious students on on Jan 7

Jalandhar, January 6, 2015: The 31st death Anniversary of the legendary Olympian Surjit Singh will be organised by honoring the meritorious students here on January 7.

According to joint press release by  Kamal Kishore Yadav,  Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar and Olympian Pargat Singh, MLA, Jalandhar Cantt, both President & Working President, respectively, of the Surjit Hockey Society, stated that to pay tributes to the legendary Olympian Surjit Singh Randhawa on his 31st death anniversary, it has been decided by the Society to honour the Meritorious Students in education field.

Surjit Hockey Society came into existence in 1984 with a pledge to keep the name of Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa, Olympian alive, who lost his life in a fatal car accident near Jalandhar on January 7, 1984, while fighting hard for up liftmen of the game of Hockey. Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa during his stint as a hockey player, participated in the Fifth World Cup Hockey Tournament, the 1974 and 1978 Asian Games. In the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games he was acclaimed as one of the best full backs in the world. In 1973, he was included in the World Hockey XI and a year after he was a member of the All-Star Hockey XI. He was also the top scorer — both in the Esanda International hockey Tournament at Perth and the 1978 Asian Games.

According to Iqbal Singh Sandhu ADC, Phgawara & Organising Secretary of Surjit Hockey Society that the 31st death Anniversary will be organised at  School for Meritorious Students, Kapurthala Road, Jalandhar on January 7at 10.00 a.m., in which renowned personalities of education & Sports field will also attend this functions.
