Chandigarh, August 18 , 2013: Punjab Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to immediately take up the issue of a shocking attack on an 80 year old Sikh gentleman by a teenager in London recently.
According to reports received from the United Kingdom a close circuit camera had captured the shocking footage of a teenaged girl attacking an 80 year old Sikh gentleman in Coventry city on August 10. According to the footage which was revealed recently the attack took place in full public view but that nobody intervened in the matter.
In a statement here today, the Deputy CM said it was shocking that the Sikh gentleman had been spat upon and that his turban was also knocked off during the attack.
Sukhbir Badal said the Union government should summon the British High Commissioner immediately to convey the hurt feelings of the entire Sikh community as well as the nation. He said the UK government must be asked to take strict action in the matter besides carrying out an awareness campaign about the Sikh religion as well as the contributions of Sikhs to British society so that such incidents do not occur again.
The Deputy CM also asked Union minister of state for External Affairs Preneet Kaur to also take up the matter separately to find out whether it was a racial attack as suspected so that remedial measures could be taken.
