A cultural jamboree marked the annual day function ‘Jashn-e-Baharan,’ being organized by the Society of Advancement of Academics, Sports and Cultural Activities (SAASCA) of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (CoBS&H) at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana on Friday.

Ludhiana, May 16, 2015: A cultural jamboree marked the annual day function ‘Jashn-e-Baharan,’ which was organized by the Society of Advancement of Academics, Sports and Cultural Activities (SAASCA) of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (CoBS&H) at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Friday.

A welcome skit followed by a foot-tapping band performance set the tone of the entire programme. The quaint charm of items such as bhangra, folk songs, tamasha and poetry recitation enthralled the audience. Besides, the outstanding performers in academics and cultural activities of the College were bestowed with highest OCPA Awards, Awards of Honour and Gold Medals.

Congratulating the prize winners, the Chief Guest, Dr M.A. Zahir, Chairman of Synetic Business School, Ludhiana and former Dean CoBS&H exhorted the students to push for excellence in their personal as well as professional lives. Self-motivation and an eye for detail would generally help quality shine a class above the mere flashiness of empty style, he added. Dr Zahir described the student life as a golden period and urged the youth to uphold the ideals of humanism as it would help them transform into better citizens.

The Guest of Honour, Mr P.P.S. Gill, Former State Information Commissioner, Punjab and a PAU alumnus, dilated upon a strong work ethic which embodies principles that guide work behavior, leading one to produce high-quality work consistently. “Technical skills are important and competence in one’s field of specialization is essential,” he observed. But having good interpersonal skills, demonstrating initiative and being dependable often mark the difference between mediocrity and excellence, he added.

While welcoming the guests and the gathering, Dr (Mrs.) Gurinder Kaur Sangha, Dean CoBS&H said that the college not only provided education in basic sciences but also served as a solution provider in research in basic sciences. She gave a five-point mantra for a successful career that would stay afloat on reliability, dedication, productivity, cooperation and character.

Earlier, Dr. M.S. Toor, Secretary SAASCA, apprised students of the activities, aims, objectives, need and importance of the society. Dr Sheetal Thapar and Dr Davinder Kocher coordinated the programme.
