Chandigarh, December 17, 2019:UGC- Human Resource Development Centre started a Short Term Course (STC) on “Strategies for Enhancing GER” under the aegis of RUSA in the Seminar hall of Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Dr.Pardeep Dagar, Director Schools, Haryana Government in his inaugural address deliberated on the vital role played by a teacher in ensuring better enrollment in educational institutions. He affirmed that a teacher as a mentor can empower the young impressionable minds and therefore, must ensure that the students grow up to be agents of socio-economic change. Citing the example of South Korea, he emphasized that dedication and commitment of a teacher is essential for bringing about qualitative difference in a country’s educational system. He exhorted the participants to play a constructive role in the process of nation building. Prof. S.K. Tomar, Honorary Director, HRDC, highlighted the relevance of such initiatives in the fast -changing academic scenario. Dr. Jagdish Mehta, Programme Coordinator, welcomed the participants from different universities and colleges of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. He emphasised that such that short-term courses sensitise the faculty members about very crucial aspects of ensuring equity in the higher education sector. Dr. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, HRDC, exhorted the participants to make optimum use of their knowledge and expertise to bring about a positive change in the society. Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Fellow and Chairperson, Department of Hindi also interacted with the participants. Prof. N.S. Mawi, an eminent educationist and former Chairman, Department of Education, Kurukshetra University, deliberated on the issue of enrollment ratio as envisaged in New Education Policy, 2019. He elaborated on the role of technology in enhancing enrollment as MOOC’s are gaining credibility in the higher education spectrum. Prof Mawi, further dwelt on the need to faster inclusive education which would invariably lead to better enrollment. Prof. Kuldeep Puri, of University School of Open Learning dwelt on the growth of education system in the post-independence India as it moved from education for some to education for all.
