Chandigarh, January 8, 2016: Punjab Sports Department is all set to unleash the sports extravaganza in the form of Shaheed-E-Azam S.Bhagat Singh Punjab Games which would be in keeping with the endeavor of Deputy Chief Minister S.Sukhbir Singh Badal to make Punjab, a sports powerhouse.
Disclosing this here today, a spokesman of state sports department said the inaugural ceremony of state games would be held on 14th February and conclude on 19th of February. He informed that the competitions during the games would be open to both men and women and to be hosted in different towns across the state.
Divulging more details, he said  the Basketball, Football, Handball, Cycling (men & women) competitions would be held in Ludhiana where as Jalandhar would host the Hockey( men), Badminton and Shooting (men and women). Patiala would organize the events of Weightlifting, Volleyball, Gymnastics along with Rythmic, Archery (men & women) and competitions in Boxing, Wrestling (Greeco and Roman style) including Judo (men and women) would be held in Sri Anandpur Sahib and Rupnagar. He further added that S.A.S. Nagar would host Swimming, Table Tennis (men & women) and Hockey (women) where as the events in Kabaddi (national style), Athletics and Roller Skating (men & women) would be held at Sangrur.
Giving more details, he said that more than 9,000 players and officials are expected to take part in the games. He said the winning teams in the games would get richer by Rs. 15 Lakh prize money per sport.
Throwing light on the sports policy of the state government, the spokesman said that it has always been the earnest desire of Deputy Chief Minister S. Sukhbir Singh Badal to see Punjab in the numero uno position in terms of sports and for that purpose the government has left no stone unturned in creating top quality infrastructure in the state. He added that the efforts of the department in league with the state government has resulted in the coming up of 7 multipurpose stadia, 7 Hockey stadiums and 1 sports school. He also informed that the state government had provided jobs to sportspersons earning laurels for the state as well as holding 2 world cups to popularize the game of Kabaddi.
