Senior Wheat Researchers Visit PAU; Discuss Sustainable Agriculture

Ludhiana, November 17, 2016: Internationally renowned wheat researcher, distinguished Professor and Chair in Wheat Genetics, Kansas University, Dr Bikram Singh Gill, and Washington State University Professor, Dr Kulwinder Singh Gill visited PAU and held discussions on sustainable agriculture with senior PAU officials and Heads of Departments.

In his remarks, Dr Bikram Singh Gill applauded PAU for its strong pre breeding programme in wheat. “The university already has the finest breeders and infrastructure, it can become the best university in the world by launching pre breeding programmes for other crops too”, said Gill. He also highlighted the need for diversity of crops for best nutritional composition.

Dr Kulwinder Gill pitched for balance between basic and applied research so that there is immediate application in the breeding pogramme. While stressing on the need for more student resource for effective research, Dr K.S. Gill appreciated PAU’s move of increasing the number of MSc and PhD seats.

The Vice Chancellor, Dr B.S. Dhillon formally welcomed the scientists and elaborated on the need for sustainable agriculture and PAU’s efforts towards the same. He said that policy intervention, vision and proper enforcement were required for a successful crop diversification programme.

Earlier, Dr R.K. Gumber, Director of Research, highlighted the research achievements of the university.
