Referendum 2020 has no takers in Punjab: Manish Tewari

Ludhiana, August 8, 2018: Senior Congress leader and former union minister Manish Tewari today said that the ‘referendum 2020’ had no takers in Punjab, rather anywhere across the world. He said, it was a desperate bid by some people who wanted to stay in circulation for one reason or the other.

Interacting with a group of reporters during the sidelines of a meeting organized at the residence of party leader Palwinder Singh Taggar, here today, Tewari said, the horrible memories of the dark decade of terrorism were too fresh in Punjabis’ memories to be forgotten and they will not let anybody to fiddle with peace in Punjab.

Replying to a question whether the ‘referendum 2020’ was being supported by the Pakistan’s ISI, the former Ludhiana MP said, ISI has been trying to stoke trouble in India right since Pakistan ‘s defeat in the 1971 war and it has never given up since.

On the issue of forming a united opposition alliance in 2019, he said that the Congress party was in favour of a broad-based alliance of like-minded secular and progressive forces to defeat the BJP led alliance. He expressed confidence that the alliance will fructify in the form of state level seat adjustments across India .

While the former minister refused to comment on the developments happening within the Aam Aadmi Party in the state saying it was its internal matter.

Asked about his plans to contest 2019 elections, Tewari said, it was up to the party and whatever responsibility and wherever the party will assign him he will gladly accept that.

About his visits to Ludhiana, he said, he has represented the constituency for five years in the parliament and has been here since 2004 and it was perfectly normal and natural for him to meet the workers and leaders and attend all the programmes he was invited for.

Among others Palwinder Singh Taggar Organiser , Pawan Dewan, Gurmail Singh Pahlwan, Avtar Kanda , Dr Onkar Chand Sharma, Narinder Sura, Bhadur Singh , Mani Bhagat, Brij Mohan Sharma, Amritpal Kalsi, Maninder Ubai , Yashpal Sharma, Baljit Gogna, Dr Deepak Manan, Balwinder Gora, Pal Singh Matharu were also present.
