Chandigarh, March 18, 2016: More than 35 participants, all distance learners of University School of Open Learning (USOL), Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh were at their creative best while competing for Declamation and Poetry recitation contests, held at Guru Tegh Bahadur Bhawan here today.
The event christened as HUNAR, was truly a platform of creative expressions which also proved as one of its own kind initiative for distance learners of USOL who normally do not get such opportunities to display their creative talents. Appreciating the exemplary creative talents, the Chief Guest of declamation of contest in the morning Dr.Rama Ratan, an eminent author, invoked the organizers to make the event more inclusive and liberal. Prof. Santosh Sharma, former Chairperson of USOL, guest of Honour of the programme gave true lessons on creativity and poetic bliss.
The USOL organized HUNAR to capture the literary talent of the student. A declamation and a poetry recitation contest were organized to bring into the focus the creative talented brigade of USOL. Professor Jaspal Kaur Kaang Chairperson of USOL inaugurated both the competitions which had received an encouraging number of entries. She highlighted the importance of such creative programmes in the overall development of students. Such cultural and interlingual progammes brought closer the teacher and the taught, she added. ‘Changing India’, ‘Role of Open Learning in Higher Education’, ‘The Web of Media’ and ‘Environment, who cares?’ were some of the topics on which students gave their presentations.
Hunger, Poetry, Female feticide, Environment and Human relations were some motifs and themes which dominated the poetry of students. The Poetry recitation contest drew the maximum response where most of the participants presented their self composed poems.
Chief Guest of the session S. Manmohan Singh Daun, an eminent punjabi poet, while reminscencing his own college days appreciated the novel enterprise on the part of organizers. He was equally overwhelmed with the display of poetic expressions of the students. Poetry is the supreme expression of one’s soul, he stated.
For Prof. Meera Malik former Co-ordinator Department of English, USOL, it was not just a revisit down the memory lane and an opportunity to enjoy the poetic-excellence of young USOL poets, she was really amazed by the HUNAR of students.
Welcoming the guests and judges, Prof. Jaspal Kaur Kaang not only expressed her gratitude for gracing the occasion and encouraged the young participants and appreciated their participation. HUNAR, she was very hopeful and reassuring, will become a regular feature of USOL student activity-calendar. The award-winners will be conferred their prizes in the 43rd Annual Prize Distribution function scheduled in the last week of this month. The judgment read by Prof. Neeru were subtle lessons on declamations and poetry recitation.Prof. Ravi K.
