Chandigarh, October 10, 2012: The Punjab Government has initiated the complete relining of Rajasthan Feeder Project with the investment of Rs.952 crore. The project would be completed in four years. Rs.80 crore would be incurred in this financial year on this project.
Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of Irrigation Department said that the Punjab Government has chalked out an elaborate strategy to strengthen the irrigation facilities in the state. He said that Rs.1128 crore has been reserved for upgrading various irrigation facilities. He further said that Rajasthan Feeder Project emerging from Harike Head works supplies water to Rajasthan. He said that this canal passes through district Ferozepur, Faridkot and Sri Muktsar Sahib. He said that owing to dilapidated condition of its embankments, water seeps from various quarters on its way to Rajasthan, which resulted in water logging affecting 84,800 hectare of agriculture land.
He said that the complete relining of Rajasthan feeder project would provide much relief from water logging on one hand and Rajasthan would get adequate water supply on other hand. He said that the Punjab Government has also been concentrating to strengthen the century old canal network in the state, which is currently operating at 30 per cent its designated capacity. He said that beside rehabilitation of canal network, unlined water courses would also be lined.
