Punjab to hire professional services of leading detective agencies for catching hold of the violators of PC-PNDT Act

Chandigarh, November 18, 2015: The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Punjab shall soon be hiring the professional services of leading detective agencies for catching hold of the violators of Pr-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act (PC-PNDT Act). This was revealed here today by Ms. Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab. She told that this innovative step has been adopted by the department to keep a strict vigil on certain nefarious and anti-social elements in the society who indulge in malpractice of sex-determination and female foeticide. The move also holds significance in view of the fast changing technology that is reportedly being misused by such elements, to earn a fast buck.
 The idea was conceived in the meeting of the State Supervisory Board of PC-PNDT chaired by Health and Family Welfare Minister, Punjab. Ms. Mahajan further stated that it was felt that the violators, at times make misuse of fast developing latest technology for sex-determination of foetus. Thus, it was felt that taking help of professional detectives to track such offenders would be fruitful in curbing the menace of female foeticide. She said that the department has already issued public notice in the newspapers inviting 'Expression of Interest' from reputed detective agencies for empanelment with the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Punjab on or before 27th November, 2015. Once these detective agencies are finalized, they shall conduct sting operations on Centers, Professional or Individuals suspected to be indulging in unfair practice of sex-determination and violating the provision of PC-PNDT Act. These empanelled detectives shall provide authentic proofs and evidences to the department of Health and Family Welfare after which the department shall pursue further legal action against the violators.
                        Ms. Vini Mahajan stated that Punjab government is committed for the cause of girl child and has taken numerous initiatives to improve the skewed sex-ratio in the state. She said the sex-ratio has fairly improved in the past few years, however still more is required to be done. Ms. Mahajan informed that awards to the informers under PC-PNDT Act has also been raised to Rs. 1 Lakh from the previous Rs. 20,000/-. The same funds would now also be utilized for the hiring services of successful detective agencies and informers. She added that the Sex-ratio of the State has improved from 876 in year 2001 to 893 in year 2011, according to the census data.
