Chandigarh, July 5, 2013: The Punjab government and the Tata group has decided to set up a network of skill development centres in joint venture to impart training to the youth in the different trades in accordance with the emerging trends and needs of the local industry in the state.

A decision to this effect was taken by the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash singh Badal here in a meeting with senior Vice President& Business Excellence HN Srinivas here at Chief Minister’s residence this evening.

Badal asked the state technical education to work out modalities to initially open such centre in Punjab on pilot basis which could be later replicated in other parts of the state. He shared his vision for the up-gradation of skill development amongst the youth to enable them to be gainfully employed besides ensuring them huge job opportunities to compete with their counterparts globally. He hoped that after the successful implementation this model to be jointly launched by the state government and Tata group, would result in training nearly 4000-5000 youth annually in different trades after which either they could be successfully self-employed or absorbed in local  industry. He underscored the need of up gradation of skills for youth to achieve the ultimate objective of human resource development as the traditional agriculture in state  has already reached at saturation and shift from it to industry was the need of the hour, which could only be possible through skill development.

Prominent who attended the meeting included Principal Secretary Technical Education AR Talwar,  Director Technical Education B. Pursharta, Special Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Gaggandip Singh Brar besides General Manager Taj Hotel Chandigarh Arun Malhotra.
