Punjab Government Introduces Sizeable Increase In Scholarship Amount For Children Of Labourers

Chandigarh, February 4, 2016: Mr Chunni Lal Bhagat, Labour Minister Punjab presided over an important meeting of Punjab Labour Welfare Board, where in which important decisions were taken. Primarily, it was decided that the scholarship scheme which was being run for the children of industrial laborers would be applicable from class six onwards instead of class nine. As per this decision, the male students of class 6 to class 8 would be entitled to an annual scholarship of Rs. 5000/- and female students to Rs. 7000/. Similarly, the male students of class 9 and 10 would be entitled to an annual scholarship of Rs. 10000/- and female students to Rs. 13000/ instead of Rs.5000 that was being given to the deserving, earlier. On the same lines,the boys of class 11and 12 would be entitled to an annual scholarship of Rs. 20000/- and girls to Rs. 25000/ instead of Rs.5000 that was being given, earlier.
          Moreover, the scholarship for boys pursuing higher education or professional courses like ie college, ITI, Polytechnic etc would be entitled to a scholarship of Rs.25000 and girls to Rs. 30000 instead of Rs.15000.
The annual scholarship amount for sons and daughters of industrial laborers pursuing medical and engineering streams is Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 50,000 respectively instead of Rs. 30,000.
It has also been decided to give hostel expenses worth Rs. 15000 and Rs 20,000 to students in colleges and those pursuing higher education.
          The amount under Shagun Scheme for the marriage of daughters of industrial laborers has also been increased from Rs.21,000 to Rs. 31,000.
          In case of death of industrial laborers or their family members, government would extend an aid of Rs.20,000 in for order to perform the last rites.
 The progress of Model Welfare Centre being constructed at Mohali for the ease of labourers was also reviewed during the meeting and it was informed that the construction would be accomplished by May 2016.
          It was also informed that computerization was being introduced in order to bring transparency in the working of Punjab Labour Welfare Board.
 
      The Member Secretary of the board appraised that the source of income of the board is the contribution of Rs. 5 per month by the laborers and Rs. 20 per month by the industrialists and it is expected that by the end of this fiscal the income of the Board would be approximately to the tune of Rs.16-17 crore.
          Besides others, Principal Secretary Labour, Dr. Roshan Sunkaria, Labour  Commissioner Punjab Mr. Tejinder Singh Dhaliwal participated in the meeting.
