Ashok Gupta, Principal Secretary, Department of Local Bodies, Punjab on Thursday starts the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan at R S Model Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, October 2, 2014: Ashok Gupta, Principal Secretary, Department of Local Bodies, Punjab has said that by 2017, all cities of the state will have 100 percent Water Supply, Sewerage, Sewage Treatment Plants, night shelters, bus shelters, Solid Waste Management and other such facilities. He said that the Punjab government would be engaging a company named Engineers India Ltd that would conduct a comprehensive study on cleaning of Budha Nullah.

Gupta said this after starting the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan at R S Model Senior Secondary School, here today. He was accompanied by Ludhiana Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, MC Commissioner Pardeep Aggarwal, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Supreet Singh Gulati, besides several others. A cultural function was also held on the occasion.

While addressing the students, Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria said that it is duty of all city residents to make sure Ludhiana remains clean and green. "Students are a nation's foundation and we should all inculcate a feeling of maintaining cleanliness amidst their minds so that it becomes a routine phenomena for them," said Gohalwaria. He also appealed to the students to plant trees on their birthdays so that Ludhiana gives a greener look.

Mayor Gohalwaria also administered oath for maintaining cleanliness under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to students and all those present during the function.

Ashok Gupta congratulated the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation for maintaining cleanliness on the city roads today. "As I entered the city today morning, I must admit that it looked much cleaner as compared to last around 10 years. But it should not remain symbolic but should become a daily affair." He even gave example of Japanese fans who cleaned the football stadium after a match in Brazil recently.

While speaking to media persons after the function, Ashok Gupta said that the state government is committed for providing 100 percent civic amenities to the residents by 2017. "We are moving into this direction and would achieve our goal by 2017," assured Gupta.

Prominent among those present during the function at R S Model Senior Secondary School, here, included Ghanshyam Thori, Additional Commissioner, MC, Ludhiana, Davinder Singh, Assistant Commissioner, MC, Ludhiana, A S Sekhon, Joint Commissioner, MC, Ludhiana, MC Councillors Mandeep Kaur Sandhu, Bhupinder Singh Bhinda and Manwinderpal Singh Makkar, Shiromani Akali Dal district president Harbhajan Singh Dang, Capt Vijay Syal, Manager, R S Model Senior Secondary School, M L Kalra, principal, R S Model Senior Secondary School, besides several others.

Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Amrit Kaur Gill also administered oath to officers and staff of Deputy Commissioner Office at Mini Secretariat, here today. While speaking on the occasion, she appealed that the officers should maintain cleanliness not only at their homes but also at their workplaces.

She also informed that a competition for maintaining cleanliness at offices under DC Ludhiana is held every three months. A large number of officers and employees actively take part in this competition, where the winner is awarded with a cash prize of Rs 10,000, besides an appreciation letter.

Functions under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan were also organised in different sub divisions, government, semi government and private institutions of the city. During these functions, employees working in respective offices were administered oath regarding maintaining cleanliness.
