Public Lecture on Patent Ecosystem of India
Chandigarh, January 30, 2019: A public lecture on, “Understanding the Patent Ecosystem of India: Gaps and Remedies”, was delivered by an internationally acknowledged patent expert and attorney, Dr (Mrs) Deepa K Tiku, at University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University, Chandigarh, here today. The event was convened by DST-Centre for Policy Research at Panjab University under the aegis of Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC). Dr. Tiku talked about the evolution of patenting system in India and recent efforts of the government to promote patent awareness and its generation in the institutes of higher learning. She highlighted that India is amongst the leading nations of the world in the domain of research publications but lags behind more than 40 nations in the domain of patent filing. She suggested a few remedial measures to narrow this gap. She also dwelt upon the various avenues offered by IP field, which can be taken up as a career option by the young technocrats. She then emphasized on the peculiarities existing viz-a-viz the Indian scenario and the challenges faced by the academia in effectively contributing towards the patent ecosystem. Earlier, Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice Chancellor, PU, spoke about the importance of patents in stimulating the innovation ecosystem of the nation, which is the need of the hour. He also remarked upon introducing Intellectual Property Rights courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and Pre-PhD programmes in the university. Dr. Tiku offered to assist in designing the courses and organize joint workshops on patents and copyrights for the benefit of both students and faculty members. The event was attended by Prof. Devinder Mehta, Dean Sciences, PU, Prof. Savita Gupta, Director, UIET, Prof. Rakesh Tuli, Advisor, UIET, Prof. Sanjeev Puri, Hony’ Director, CIIPP and more than 130 persons, comprising of faculty members, research scholars and students from various departments of the University.
