PU Boys Hostel No 1 named after former Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover unveiling the portrait of former Chief Justice of India, Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan at Boys Hostel Number 1 PU Campus on December 21. Chandigarh, December 21, 2014: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover today unveiled the portrait of former Chief Justice of India, Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan at the Boys Hostel Number 1 in PU Campus.
The Boys Hostel Number 1, which is one of the oldest hostel of the University, is named after the former Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Justice Mahajan as the Mehr Chand Mahajan Hall.
Many dignitaries including Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Raj Rahul Garg, the daughter of Justice Mahajan and former Principal of MCMDAV College for Women, Chandigarh Dr Sneh Mahajan, Adviser to President DAV College Management Committee Mr HR Gandhar, PU Registrar Col. GS Chadha (Retd.), PU Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Prof Navdeep Goyal, PU DSW (Women) Prof Nandita Singh, Principal of MCMDAV College for Women Dr Puneet Bedi,former Principal of DAV College Mr RC Jiwan, DAV College Principal Dr B C Josan, many Deans, PU Senators, Syndicate members, former deans and wardens were present on the
occasion.
In their speeches, PU VC Prof Grover, Dr Sneh Mahajan,  HR Gandhar, DSW Prof Navdeep and  Nandita recalled the great contributions of Justice Mahajan in the national building as the Chief Justice of India, Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and as PU Senator. The speakers described him as an accomplished lawyer, honourable jurist and statesman.
 They also hailed his contribution in the development of PU. It may be recalled that Justice Mahajan served as the Prime Minister of Jammu & Kashmir from October 15, 1947 to March 14, 1948 and played a key role in the accession of J&K to India. Justice Mahajan had graduated in Law from Punjab University, Lahore in 1912. In 1948, Justice Mahajan was appointed as one of the first judges of the federal court of independent India and was later elevated as third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India in 1954. 
Justice Mahajan was awarded Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) along with that to Sardar Vallabhai Patel in the first convocation of Panjab University (PU) in independent India on March 5, 1949.
