Ludhiana, September 5, 2012: A large number of leaders and members of `Valmiki Samaj Bachao Andolan’ staged a dharna at Bharat Nagar Chowk here this afternoon, in support of their demands.
The protest began at 12 pm and ended at around 2 pm after an assurance by Joint commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana to look into their demand.
A great inconvenience was caused to general public due to the two-hour-long traffic interruption by the protestors.
Speaking on the occasion, the Andolan’s chairman Surinder Kalyan strongly condemned the functioning of A to Z Company.
Adding, he said the ruling alliance at the time of assembly elections had promised that the company’s workers would lift garbage from garbage dumps only but now the company workers had also started collecting garbage from houses. They said this practice should be stopped.
Protestors also shouted slogans against the Punjab Government and the company concerned.
Tight security arrangements were made on the spot, to ensure maintenance of law and order.
