PRADHAN MANTRI JAN DHAN YOJANA: Get Bank Accounts & Rupay Cards activated at the earliest

Ludhiana, April 8, 2015: Deputy Commissioner Rajat Agarwal has appealed to all account holders under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana to get their saving accounts as well as the RuPay cards activated so that they can avail of financial benefits under the Yojana. In Ludhiana district, a total of 519926 bank accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and the RuPay cards have been issued to majority of them. The DC said that it has come to his notice that many people are yet to get their saving accounts and RuPay cards activated.

One can get his or her saving bank accounts and RuPay cards activated by visiting the concerned bank. The DC said that one will not have to pay any activation charges.

RuPay is the home-grown card payment scheme launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to rival global payment processing giants Visa and MasterCard.

Deputy Commissioner Rajat Agarwal informed that under this scheme, 519926 saving bank accounts have been opened in several banks out of which RuPay cards have been issued to 92 percent beneficiaries. He said that for getting them activated, the beneficiary will have to contact the concerned bank, but in Ludhiana, many beneficiaries are yet to contact their bank authorities, due to which the bank accounts and RuPay cards are yet to be activated. He said that some of the beneficiaries are yet to collect their RuPay cards from the banks, which they should do at the earliest.

The DC further said that once the bank account as well as the RuPay card is activated, atleast one entry a month is required to keep it activated. It is also mandatory to get the bank account linked with the Aadhar card.

Benefits of Jan Dhan Yojana:

1.            It is a zero balance savings account.

2.            Every account holder will get RuPay Debit card (which is India’s domestic debit card). RuPay card can also be used for eCommerce transactions.

3.            Family of account holder will get accident insurance cover of Rs. 1,00,000.

4.            Life cover of Rs. 30,000 was declared as an incentive for those opening the account by 26 January 2015. This life cover would be provided Life Insurance Corporation of India.
