PM’s brother Surjit Singh Kohli attends Vijay Dashmi celebrations at Amritsar

Amritsar, October 13, 2013: The historical and common festival of Vijay Dashmi commonly known as Dussehra celebrated with great zeal and zest in the holy city of Amritsar.
Like every year PPCC Vice President and in charge Majha zone MLA O.P. Soni attended the grand Dussehra celebrations in the border town of Chheharta as the chief guest.
The celebration was organised by Amritsar Citizen Council and Panch Rattan Krishna Mandir and was attended by lakhs of people of all the religions and castes.
Addressing the gathering, Soni said Dussehra is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India. On this day in the Treta Yug, Rama, also called Shri Ram, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, killed the great demon Ravana who had abducted Lord Rama's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. Lord Rama, his brother Lakshmana, their follower Hanuman and an army of monkeys fought a great battle to rescue Sita. The entire narrative is recorded in the epic Ramayana. The day also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demons Mahishasur.
Explaining it further, Soni said that on this day we are to decide which path we are to follow; the true path which Lord Rama taught us or the evil path which Ravana followed and disappeared from the face of the earth. The society is now being spoiled by the menaces such as drugs, crimes and corruption and the days like Dussehra teach us to desert the Ravana’s path full of menaces and adopt the true path of Lord Rama.
Explaining further, Soni said that the burning of effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkaran are examples of victory of truth over evil so we all must follow this teaching and promise over selves on this that we leave all the evils behind and begin a new life based on truth so that we all may play our part in the building of a new world. The teachings of our Lords are there to enlighten our path towards a rich society free of menaces.
