Plastic Surgery Day observed
Ludhiana, July 16, 2018: Plastic Surgery Day was observed today by Department of Plastic Surgery by conducting hands on workshop on first aid in Road Side Accidents at Govt. Secondary School , Sarabha Nagar , Ludhiana . The workshop was presided over by Mrs Kusum , the Principal of the School and 100 students participated in this workshop. While delivering the keynote address on the ‘Plastic Surgery Day’ Dr Sanjeev Uppal , Professor & Head of Plastic Surgery stressed that when approaching an accident scene it is really important to ensure your own safety. Make sure that all traffic has stopped and it is flagged up that there has been an accident otherwise there may be additional casualties. Be aware of oncoming traffic to ensure that is not posing an additional danger. If other people are around; get them to phone the emergency services . He told to take care of following points . · People screaming, crying and making a noise have to be breathing – your initial priority is therefore to check anyone quiet and not moving. · Quickly check if quiet casualties are responsive: – if there is no response check if they are breathing. If they are unresponsive and breathing ensure they are in a position where they are leaning forward or to one side in a position where the airway will remain open. Move them the minimum necessary and avoid twisting them. · Support the head and neck to avoid them twisting – do not cover their ears, keeping talking to them calmly and keep checking that they are still breathing · If the person is not breathing you will need to resuscitate · Do not allow anyone to smoke at the scene or give the casualties anything to eat or drink following the accident in case they later need an operation. Also water given to an unconscious person can enter his airway and even cause death . First aid dos and don’t s 1. Check yourself first 2. Check the other person(s) for injuries 3. Look for signs of breathing 4. Call for help 5. Check for obstructions in the person’s mouth and throat 6. Perform life saving techniques like cardio pulmonary resuscitation . 7. If there is bleeding from the mouth or the patient is vomiting, turn the person to his/her side. This will avoid any chances of the person choking. 8. If there are extensive wounds, try to control the bleeding using pressure to the area using a cloth. Press down with your palms rather than your finger tips. 9. If the person’s neck is in an awkward position (not normally placed) or the person is unconscious, do not move the patient. Get help immediately. This could mean that the person’s neck is broken, and moving him/her in such a situation can cause more harm than good. 10. Keep the person warm Further Dr Uppal explained the Tips to remember while shifting a person to the hospital · The patient should be transported on a stretcher or a stiff board. This is important as reducing the amount of movement the person experiences is essential to avoid his/her injuries from becoming worse. · Keep the person’s neck and back straight. You could place a rolled up towel or thick cloth under the neck for better support. · Ensure that the person is lying down flat. · If there is only a limb injury, the patient can be transported in a sitting position. · In case of a bleeding injury, lift the injured part above the person’s body level and apply pressure on the region. Keep applying pressure till you reach the hospital. This helps control and eventually stop the bleeding. · Make sure the person has a pulse and is breathing on the way to the hospital. If he/she stops breathing, be prepared to start CPR or EAR in the vehicle Dr Vikas Jain and Dr Gaurav Bhatia conducted a quiz on accidents and first aid at the concluding part of the hands on workshop.
