PAU Plant Pathology Alumni Contribute Rs 5 Lakh To Institute Gold Medal

Ludhiana, July 3, 2015: The Department of Plant Pathology of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has recently instituted a “Plant Pathology Alumni Medal.” It is the initiative of Dr P.S.Sekhon, Head, Department of Plant Pathology. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a citation and a medal. It will be awarded to meritorious M.Sc. student of Plant Pathology for excelling in academics and for innovative research. The medal has been instituted with monetary contributions made by the alumni namely Dr H.S. Dhindsa, working in Federal Government of Australia; Dr J.S. Sekhon, Former Chief Agriculture Officer, Faridkot and presently in Brampton, Canada; Dr H.S. Bariana, Institute of Plant Breeding, University of Sydney; and Dr P.S. Sekhon, Head, Department of Plant Pathology. The alumni have contributed Rs 5 lakh in total.

The occasion was also marked by the guest lecture on “Breeding for Rust Resistant Wheat- Indo-Australian Collaboration.” Dr Bariana delivered the lecture, held under the aegis of Indian Society of Plant Pathologists. The postgraduate students and faculty from the Departments of Plant Pathology, Plant Breeding and Genetics, and School of Agricultural Biotechnology, PAU attended the lecture. In his talk, Dr Bariana highlighted the significance of Indo-Australian collaborations in hunt for new rust resistance genes and their incorporation into elite bread wheat germplasm.

Dr B. S. Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, PAU, while congratulating the contributors for instituting a medal in Plant Pathology, said, “This medal will motivate the students to work hard.”

Dr (Mrs) Neelam Grewal, Dean, Postgraduate Studies and Dr H. S. Dhaliwal, Dean, College of Agriculture also appreciated the efforts made by the alumni of Plant Pathology.

On this occasion, Dr S.S. Sokhi, former Additional Director of Extension Education (retd.), PAU was felicitated for his contributions towards human resource development in the field of Plant Pathology.
