Ludhiana, October 6, 2017: In district Hoshiarpur, Til crop is cultivated on an approximate area of 300 ha, mainly in kandi region. Its cultivation is suitable in this area due to low water requirement and minimal crop management practices as compared to other crops. Keeping in view the importance of Til crop in this area and for further promotion of Til cultivation in the area, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur organized a field day in operational village Bachhohi on 6-10-17. Various technical lectures were delivered for the benefit of the farmers.

Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Deputy Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur discussed about the purpose of the cluster frontline demonstrations on Til crop and gave a detailed account of the recommended Til cultivation practices, improved varieties, weed control and pest management. He also shared important hints on cultivation practices for rabi crops-wheat, gobhi sarson, gram and lentil. He also exhorted the farmers/farmwomen to follow the recommendations of Punjab Agricultural University for reducing unnecessary expenditure on cultivation and maximizing their farm income. Dr. Bons also appealed to the farmers to shun the practice of burning of paddy residue. He also sensitized the farmers about the different strategies for paddy straw management. Dr. Arunbir Singh, Asstt. Prof. (Animal Science), shed light on the management of dairy animals in the coming season. He also impressed upon the farmers/farmwomen regarding usage of mineral mixture and uromin lick for the milch animals. Dr Princy, Assistant Professor (Home Science), guided the farmwomen regarding nutrition and prevention of anaemia in rural women through low cost iron rich recipes. She also laid stress on integrated nutrition gardening.

The farmers and the experts had a fruitful discussion on various doubts regarding Til cultivation and other queries. A formal vote of thanks to the experts and the farmers/farmwomen was proposed by Dr Maninder Singh Bons. KVK also put up an exhibition regarding latest agricultural techniques by PAU and for sale of seed of berseem, taramira, gobhi sarson, toria, gram, lentil, uromin lick, mineral mixture rhizobium cultures and PAU literature for the benefit of the farmers.
