PAU KISAN MELA TO HIGHLIGHT NEW RECOMMENDATIONS

Ludhiana, March 23, 2017: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is all set to hold its two-day Kisan Mela at Ludhiana on March 24 and 25. Farmers in large number from Punjab and adjoining states will participate in the mela.

Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, said, “Kisan Mela is an important event for disseminating latest farm information and recent technologies among farmers.”

Dr R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education, PAU, said agro-industrial exhibition, technical question-answer session, field demonstrations, cultural programme, produce competition, and sale of farm literature and hybrid seeds will be the major attractions of the mela.

During the farmers’ fair, stalls will be put up by different departments of PAU to provide a platform to the visiting farmers to interact with the scientists, see live demonstrations, know about newly released crop varieties and latest technologies, discuss their farm issues and seek solutions for the same.

The Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics will inform the farmers about the newly released varieties namely PR 126 of rice; TMB 37 of spring/summer mungbean; CSR 30, Punjab Basmati 4 and Punjab Basmati 5 of basmati; CoPb 92, CoPb 93 and CoPb 94 of sugarcane; SL 955 of soybean; AL 1992 of arhar; Rajmash Chitra and Rajmash Lal of rajmash.

The Departments of Fruit Science and Vegetable Science will explain about improved varieties of fruit crops, irrigation techniques for orchards, and recommended varieties of vegetables.

The Departments of Entomology and Plant Pathology will dwell on control of whitefly in cotton, beekeeping as a subsidiary occupation, management of yellow and brown rusts in wheat, seed treatment and seedling dip treatment for management of foot rot in basmati rice, etc.

The Departments of Agronomy and Soil Science will throw light on bed planted wheat, consortium biofertilizer in wheat, rice residue management, leaf colour chart technology and soil testing.

The Department of Microbiology will familiarize the farmers with mushroom cultivation and spawn production technology, and use of biofertilizers in various crops.

The Departments of Zoology, and Forestry and Natural Resources will delve on the control of rodent pests, beneficial birds in agriculture, recommended wheat varieties and their sowing time under poplar plantations.

The Departments of Processing and Food Engineering, and Farm Machinery and Power Engineering will apprise the farmers of vegetable washing and turmeric polishing machines, mechanical paddy transplanter, direct seeded rice machine, paddy straw chpper-cum-spreader, etc.

The School of Agricultural Biotechnology will inform about the application of molecular markers in fruits and vegetables, and developing maize germplasm tolerant to water logging and drought stress.

The School of Energy Studies for Agriculture will acquaint the farmers with biogas generation from paddy straw, and large capacity forced circulation solar dryer and domestic solar dryer for turmeric.

The College of Home Science will give guidelines on scientific child rearing and right way to stay healthy. The College will also hold competitions in mehandi, phulkari embroidery and drawing.
