PAU IMPARTS TRAINING IN PRESERVATION OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Ludhiana, June 19, 2017: Farmers and farm women from various parts of Punjab participated in the five-day training course on “Preservation of Fruits and Vegetables at Household Level,” which concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The course was held in collaboration with the Department of Food Science and Technology, PAU.
Giving details, Dr G.S.Buttar, Additional Director of Extension Education, said the experts highlighted the significance of preservation of fruits and vegetables, their proper management techniques with focus on use of need based chemicals.
Dr Poonam A. Sachdev, Head, Department of Food Science and Technology and Technical Coordinator of the course, gave practical training in the preparation of mango chutney, murabba, squash and pappad. She also demonstrated the making of potato chips; synthetic vinegar; and tomato sauce, puree, juice and chutney. Dr Sachdev provided useful tips for packaging of home made products.
Another expert, Ms Jagbir Rahel demonstrated the making of mango pickle; mixed vegetable pickle; and green chili, lemon, galgal and ginger pickle. Besides, the trainees were given training in the preparation of mixed fruit jam, guava jelly andbadam sharbat. The trainees were also given tips for keeping jars insect free.
Mr Rahul Gupta, an expert, also imparted training in making of food products.
The Course Coordinators, Dr T.S. Riar and Dr Kulvir Kaur presented the course details and informed the trainees about trainings, conducted by PAU, from time to time.
