PAU to hold national symposium on crop improvement

Ludhiana, November 4, 2014: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will organise a national symposium on “Crop Improvement for Inclusive Sustainable Development” from November 7-9. The symposium will be hosted jointly by Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding, New Delhi; Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources; New Delhi; Maize Technologists Association of India, New Delhi; Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi; Crop Improvement Society of India, Ludhiana and PAU. The Finance Minister of Punjab, Parminder Singh Dhindsa will be the chief guest while PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon will preside over. The scientists from across the country will participate in the symposium.

Giving details, Dr R.K. Gumber, Additional Director of Research (Crop Improvement) and Organizing Secretary of the symposium, said that the focus will be on four thematic areas such as developing varieties having climate resilience and higher productivity; integration of biotechnology with conventional crop improvement; breeding for nutritional and industrial quality traits; and conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources. He further said that a panel discussion on “Challenges of Plant Breeding in Public Sector” will be organised where eminent scientists will participate and discuss this issue. Besides, conventional lectures will be delivered by scientists of international repute, he added.
