PAU to hold Crop Produce Competition during Kisan Mela

Ludhiana, March 3, 2015: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will hold crop produce competition during the first day of on-campus Kisan Mela on March 20. The mela will be based on the theme “Adopt Crop Diversification, Save Natural Resources.”

Giving details, Dr SPS Brar, Convener of produce competition, said that among vegetables, competition in only recommended and approved varieties of potato, carrot, green onion/onion, green garlic, brinjal, radish, turnip, tomato, peas, chappan kaddu, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumber, green chillies, sweet pepper or any other seasonal vegetable will be held. He further said that competition in the recommended varieties of fruits such as ber, lemon, guava, kinnow, papaya or any other seasonal fruit will also be organized. Besides, competition in gladiolus, cut rose/loose rose, marigold, gerbera or any other flower will be conducted, he added. The mela will also see competition in sugarcane, shakker/gur, gram plants with pods, turmeric or any other crop, he said.

Elaborating, Dr Brar told that the sample size of potato, carrot, green onion/onion, green garlic, brinjal, radish, and turnip should be 10 pieces whereas of tomato, peas and chappan kaddu, it should be half kg. The sample size of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and cucumber should be 3 pieces while that of green chillies and sweet pepper, it should be 100 gm and 250 gm, respectively. Among fruits, half kg of ber and lemon; six pieces of guava and kinnow and 3 pieces of papaya are the requirements, he added. The size of cut rose/loose rose and marigold should be six stems/spikes/250 gms, whereas of gladiolus and gerbera , it should be six stems/spikes and six stems, respectively. He further said that sample size of sugarcane should be five canes whereas of shakker/gur, gram plants with pods and turmeric, it should be half kg.

Dr Brar informed that the entries for the competition will be entertained up to 11.30 a.m. on March 20 at the produce competition stall, near PAU Kairon Kisan Ghar. No entry will be entertained after the specified time, he told.
