PAU gets network project on fruit borer insects

Ludhiana, November 27, 2014: The Department of Fruit Science of the Punjab Agricultural University has been selected as one of the centres under newly launched “Consortium Research Platform on Borers in Network Mode,” funded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Giving details, Dr M.I.S Gill, Head, Department of Fruit Science said that under this project, funds to the tune of Rs 22 lakh shall be sanctioned for current financial plan. “The project will be coordinated by the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, which has selected 31 centres as network partners belonging to various agro-ecological regions of the country,” he added. Dr Sandeep Singh, Assistant Entomologist is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Centre. A formal launch-cum-orientation workshop of this network project was organised by IIHR on August 18-19, 2014 at Bengaluru, he said . The project was formally launched by Dr N.K. Krishna Kumar, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science).

Dr Sandeep Singh said that PAU Centre has been assigned activities such as screening of germplasm against fruit borer pests, identification of natural enemy complex of borer pests in different fruit crops, area-wide management of borer pests, development of integrated pest management (IPM) modules for eco-friendly management of borer pests in fruit crops like guava, mango, peach, pear, plum, litchi, sapota and pomegranate, etc.
